OUT WITH THE OH SO QUIET AND IN WITH THE NOISE

Come on, make 2023 your year of music. Here are five ways to get more music into your life for 2023.

1. Join a choir.

A church choir, a community choir, your school choir (yes, teachers too), your workplace choir…any choir. Singing improves mood. Fact. Singing in a choir has loads of benefits to both its members and to the community it belongs to. So sing, and sing like you mean it.

2. Learn a new instrument.

Piano, drums, saxophone, ukulele, recorder, harmonica, kazoo. Anything goes as long as it makes you happy. If you already play something, make 2018 your year to learn something new. Push yourself – why not try something which uses tabs rather than sheet music or why not learn something percussive rather than something stringed.

3. Go to a gig.

Immerse yourself in the music. Be completely overwhelmed by the noise and lose yourself for a night.

4. Watch something musical at the West End, on Broadway…or just at your local theatre.

I love musical theatre. It’ll get you in the mood for music whatever you see. You’ll laugh (maybe), you’ll cry (definitely) and you’ll have a great night (I’m certain). If you have kids, why not take them along with you – they’ll love it. I can’t wait until my 4 year old is a bit older so I can take him with me.

5. Dance.

I wish I could dance; I’m sure a lot of people wish they could dance. Dance and music go hand in hand and an evening doing Zumba, or ballroom, or tap dancing will fill your mind and soul with enough music and rhythm to keep you buzzing for a couple of days!

I hope 2023 brings you and your family lots of joy, lots of noise and lots of fun.

Let’s make some noise!

WHAT IS FANFARE MUSIC?

In 2008 my husband (to-be at that time) and I moved to a town in West Yorkshire called Ossett. We were both civil engineers working in the area and it made sense to settle there. Growing up I played the piano, I learnt at 4, peaked early, and played a lot for school at concerts […]

WHY LEARN SCALES?

A question every student of the piano asks, I’m sure. But why are they so important, and why do so many people find them tricky, boring, hard work, a pain in the backside? First, what is a scale? A scale is the collection, played step by step, note by note, of all the notes which […]

DO I NEED TO HAVE A GOOD MEMORY TO BE A GOOD MUSICIAN?

I recently posted a video on Facebook and YouTube about Musical Opposites. It was a really basic introduction to some common musical terms, the ones which I know well because I’ve seen them hundreds, thousands, of times. But there are many more which I don’t remember so well; I remember the word, but I don’t […]

WHAT CAN I SAY ABOUT LOVE SONGS THAT HASN’T ALREADY BEEN SAID?

People have written music above love since…well since people started writing music. But somehow that doesn’t seem to have made the subject matter in any way boring or repetitive; our thirst for romance is undoubtedly insatiable.  A brief scan of google showed me that writing about the subject of love songs is not uncommon so […]
