Sector: Charity
Location: Wakefield
Participants: 4
Workshop type: Half day workshop
We ran a small workshop for 4 members of the team focussing on bringing the team together, trying something new and growing in confidence. We learnt a song in 2 part harmony and I created a varied warm up to inspire their music therapy leader.
This was a small team which meant everyone could be heard. I needed to help people overcome nerves quickly and the fun warm ups helped create a safe, fun and relaxed atmosphere. All but one of the team said they thought they “couldn’t sing” so I wanted to build confidence during the workshop too.
We warmed up our voices to start with using a varied set of exercises to relax the singers, gain trust and create a fun atmosphere. Once nerves started to disappear we started work on a song in 2 part harmony with the more confident singer taking the harmony line. The easy melody line was great for the singers with less confidence and we worked on getting people to sing out, rather than hold back.
Confidence grew as the session went on and people learnt to let go of mistakes, embracing them as part of the process. We split the song up into sections and tackled first the melody, second the harmony and finally assembling the two parts. By taking our time and listening to each other carefully the parts came together really well. As a result the team felt uplifted and more confident.

“It was amazing. It was fun, we all had a good time, we made brilliant music together and it was just the best! Singing makes me feel happy, energised, raring to go, uplifted, brilliant. If you’re thinking about singing at work, you must do it! It’s team building, it’s positivity, it’s getting to know one another, it’s just great.”
